Let's be clear about this.

It's not a bass guitar.

It's a bass.Yes, there is a difference. No, I'm not going to agree with you that they are "the same thing."

Much like how a cello isn't a bass violin, or a tuba isn't a bass trombone.

Yes, they are related. No, they are not interchangeable.

Yeah, yeah, I know, nobody cares.Whatever, I felt like posting this.

Specifically, it's an electric bass.

Mopy, it is actually a direct translation of the bass you're talking about (the bottom member of a traditional string quartet, the one that looks like a giant cello).

So, whereas an electric guitar is a modified version of a guitar, an electric bass is actually a modified version of a so-called "upright" bass that was made to be both portable and played with the fingers rather than a bow.

The idea of using pizzicato "upright" bass as accompaniment in popular music originated somewhere in dixieland music I think. I'm pretty sure it was BEFORE the guitar. So, while the design of the electric bass doesn't look dissimilar from an electric guitar, the fact is it is functionally based on a bass, not a guitar.

But it's not as though people don't know what you're talking about when you say bass guitar. Obviously it's not vague that way. I suppose the term "bass" is a bit nonspecific.

It bothers me more when people call electric guitars "lead guitars." Those people have no concept of what "lead" means, and that's just an adjective.

I love the movie Some Like it Hot, and they used the word bass to describe the bow fiddle Jerry/Daphne plays. And, if that's the case and true to form, wouldn't THAT be what a bass is, as it came before the guitar style bass we know today? I think that in order to avoid confusion and misinterpretation, describing it as a bass guitar is fair play. But, then again, I don't have a vast knowledge of instruments and can understand your annoyance if you simply know better.

Dman you guys know your instruments, I'll be honest I'm pretty 'ignorant' and 'dumb' according to majority of the music teachers at the music department, but at least I don't act like I know this sorta stuff. I hate it when ppl talk like they know it all and then when you both meet somebody who's obviously smarter, they end up in a big argument over nothing.
