From the lens Is Squidoo A Scam - Read On

Squidoo say they will review the blocked lenses within 1 to 30 days. If they actually did this the lensmaster would know where they stood but this is not the case in my experience.

Squidoo leave a lot to be desired after lensmasters spend many hours a week trying to perfect their lenses. I have been at this for three and a half years with loads of positive comments and what for? What a waste of time this medium has been. I will be moving all my lenses to a more appreciative medium and would recommend that you do the same, what a scam!

It's so sad to see this has also happened to you. ALL your lenses locked and gone. how utterly miserable and despicable of them to do that to your work.
After a good month in November, then an interrupted good month in December (thanks to Mobile BS) the sales totally dried up in the new year. So I stopped creating new lenses months ago when the downward spiral was locked in. and especially as they were locking lenses as fast as I was rebuilding them - lol!
It's so sad. But there are plenty of new fresh innocent lensmasters that are gullible and do not understand what all these changes mean to old hands like ourselves, so despite losing hundreds of thousands of our good quality pages, there will be plenty of built-by-the-book new pages created, with mandatory personalization including Aunt Bertha and company - lol!
I'm wishing you the very best in your endeavors on your new blogs and sites - that YOU control --- much prosperity to you!

I a glad you wrote this. I don't think squidoo is a scam as the platform is good. As usual, the people managing it need help but their responses in the forum showed they only listen selectively. I remembered being in the same position before and I had to swallow my pride to get help from those who knew better how to manage change and I got the worst complainers to become my major helpers. I feel bad for you leaving. They have thousands more new squids who will take your place so for them, this is no loss. I my past experience, when few students enrolled in our school, I woke up . Squidoo doesn't yet have this problem.

Thanks for your comments and the Squidlike, appreciated. I realise that new Squids are joing all the time but the figures of lost clicks from inside Squidoo and from the search engines, should be ringing some bells pretty soon. They can't surely let themselves slip down the rankings to the extent they have done already can they? They have slipped in Alexa rankings from 160th in the world to 710th in a short while, looks like they are in freefall to me. Remeber when the lenses waiting for the green tick used to be in the 4 million range, they are now in the 1.5 million range, doesn't that tell you that they lost nearly 2.5 million lenses. I hope you stay and keep going,it's just not worth my effort. Wouldn't like to see Squidoo grind to a halt but as you say they are very selective and their customer service is very much appreciated by all looking at the comments here. (lol)

It's a shame to read that your lenses are removed, I'm still relatively new to Squidoo and thankfully have no problems but read a lot about, and given that it is not only new lenses that are locked are thrown but also of people sitting for a long time on Squidoo. Thanks for your vistit, and like my honeybee lens, I really appreciate it.

Hotweb.I don't think the squid-land folks will be taking this lens down any time soon, as it has all the vestiges of truth. True, you do go on a bit of a rant with them, but in reality it is all truth. There is not one of us (alright, maybe one) that has not had a lens locked at one time or another, and there has been tons of hand wringing over it all. Cries of unfair on all manner of sites on the squid forum, some right and some wrong. Bottom line though, I too find myself at a cross roads. Since the latest round of 'locking' of lenses, I have stopped creating new lenses. Something I thought I would never do and something I encouraged others not to stop doing as well. But, after re-writing different lenses at different times over the last few months, I agree.stop submitting new squids until we find out where all of this is going. As for real people running squid-land? i think there are real people behind the scenes, after all, someone has to get paid for all of this content being submitted and all of the advertising displays on all squids. Now this is not meant to discount the bots you refer to, as they are very real, I am just saying that there are real people somewhere and not just those that tow the line. (those folks are generally just some of us) I just think that the squid folks in charge.are a very tight knit and closely guarded group who have lost the original idea behind all of this. Saying that though, in no way implies they are out to get us, just that they are there to protect their own pocket books first. So, thank you for this lens and for your insightful comments into it all. It is a great way to get the word out

Thank you for your comments and participtation in this lens. I agree with what you say. Seth Godin is supposedly a marketing guru but his team have certainly lost their way by paying too close attention to Google. They could protect themselves far better and have more search engine involvement if they realized that the lensmasters are their life blood. Screwing with the lensmasters puts the entire Squidoo concept in jeopardy.
When Google themselves pagerank your lenses (mine were all PR3 and PR4) that should tell Squidoo that Google likes them and to leave them alone. I just don't understand their thinking at all. Good luck for the future.

Can you move all your lenses to another place even though its your own writing without being considered violation of terms and all that? I once had a blog blocked through something I had copied and rewritten from another place on to my blog unbelievable. Just goes to show that there is nothing better than your own website after all. Also once I uploaded a video on you tube and someone voted it as unsuitable quite astounding it was a video of a Swan swimming around on the lake where I lived. I say they were quite envious lol. Things that happen wishing you the best of luck anyway but I have never tried taking my original work anywhere else because of that blog thing.
Glad you like my rollercoaster year of the water dragon lens too.
Also I was writing at another place and after about three years they inform me I had ten thousand hits to a certain page but when I looked at it those hits never showed up anywhere. Its a jungle kid out there a real jungle but a lot of fun too. I have learned to take the good with the bad.
I am after my own website as I am fed up of being at the mercy of others in many senses
At the moment I am using a subdomain but at least its mine and they are not going to pull the rug from under my feet.
Again good luck with whatever you do.xxx

Hi Susan Thanks for your comments and Squidlie. The way I see it with Squidoo, even though it's your own writing it can be considered against terms and conditions if you show anywhere else in its entirety. However if you rewrite so it is still the same subject but unique it should be OK. Check against Copyscape.com You have some great lenses but in my opinion it would be good to have a plan B. Both Squidoo and Google are being a real pain at the moment.

I too am updating lenses and not writing anything new until I see which way the wind blows at Squidoo. I once had a lens locked the same day it got a purple star. But that was quite awhile ago so I'm hanging out and testing the waters. Since the recent changes I've only one other lens has been locked and it was addressed within the promised week. Although I had to go check it to see if it had been unlocked. I didn't get a confirmation from anyone at Squidoo. And like you, it hurts to read that I'm welcome to take my stuff elsewhere when I've worked so hard to play within the rules at Squidoo. That's a flippant comment that should only come after there is some proof that the lens owner has been abusive.

I am sorry this happened to you and is happening to many other reputable and hard-working squids. I do empathize. I am a very new squid, joined the RocketSquids program shortly after signing up here and have always made lenses based upon HQ guidelines and TOS. Although interpretation of such is open to speculation and leaves a lot to be desired and that is one big issue in itself.
Even so, several of mine have been locked without warning and the last one they locked was actually featured on their Mother's Day Celebrate magazine pages and elsewhere. The argument about old timers not adapting to change is wearing thin when something I made only weeks ago gets discarded on a whim when it was so recently endorsed and celebrated by HQ.
I could say a lot more but have noticed that my account is under quite a bit of scrutiny already and I think being outspoken may have fueled that. The ironic thing about my ill fated caper here on Squidoo is that I am NOT here to make money. A good portion of my royalties are donated to charity. Quite frankly it is not worth the brain strain, disappointment or frustration.

Thankfully I have seen the light and will expend the bulk of my energy in places where the rewards are worth the efforts. I wish you all the best and thank you for visiting my lonely socks article. That is what brought me to your single, remaining article.

I'm another Giant Squid 100 sad to see what is happening on Squidoo. I'm in a wait and see mode, but I'm only investing time in updating lenses that really need updates and I'm not writing new lenses until I see which way the wind will blow. I'm hoping things stabilize because I have loved Squidoo and it gave me my start in writing online. But I do have to earn money, and it's not happening here right now. I see many Giant Squids and former Squidoo angels getting lenses locked without warning, and my heart goes out to them. I don't think Squidoo is a scam, but I do think it's an unsafe place for squids to swim right now.

Thank you for your comments, appreciated. If they even attack their own Giant Squids then that's a recipe for disaster. Just looking at the numbers it very obvious that people are not making lenses at the rate they were before and with other restrictions in place, the community feeling missing and the lack of traffic and money earning capabilities, it seems a lot of action is on hold. Sad that even the Giant Squids can't function in this acid sea.

Hi hotweb and all the other squids out there. All this lenses is getting locked because google is trying to rid the internet of so called guru's of internet marketing that have used squidoo and any other means possible to sell their scam. If you looked at my lens about things I dislike online then you can read in between the line if you sit back and read carefully. All this is happening because of information overload. Everyone is saying it is easy to make money but no one is giving the real truth so the guru's just continue to scam people and the advertisers is pulling out of google. That is why squidoo is also trying to rid it's lenses of that. Google has lost a lot on the stock market because of the scamming. So I hope everyone don't leave in a hurry because I would hate to loose all my new friends that I have not yet met. Keep well everyone

hotweb Jun 12, 2013 @ 8:42 am
Hi again. Google has gained about $200 on the stock market in the last few months because they have charged their adverisers more to advertise and cut back on the payouts to normal people, leaving more for themselves. When people creat good informational lenses that are unique contemt they should not expect Squidoo to take those lenses offline. The main problem seems to be that Squidoo cannot differentiate between unique content written by the lensmaster and content that is stolen from the original lens and placed on a blog somewhere with an earlier date than the original content. Of course, there are scammers out there but a lot of the lensmasters have been creating unique content for years only to be chopped down by Squidoo. Let's hope you don't fall foul of it in the future. You will see by the comments placed here that no-one is safe from this lunacy. Even Giant 100 Squids are drowning in this acid sea.

I haven't had any lenses locked permanently but I have had to spend lots of time updating existing lenses and it is that which has made Squidoo lose some of its sparkle for me. I would like to create more lenses but I have a secret fear of them all being locked and losing everything.

Thanks for posting this page. I have been with Squidoo since Day 2 while it was in Beta. I spend hours creating lenses to the best of my ability (I had about 300 before this craziness started). I spend countless hours keeping them updated and promoted. I used to really love making lenses but the hostile environment we are experiencing presently makes me think that Squidoo really is trying to get us to leave. I see no point in updating lenses or creating new ones with the threat of having them locked always a possibility. What a waste of time! I am now putting my time and energy into my own blogs.

Thank you very much for commenting. You dedicate yourself, every day to providing, updating and keeping within the rules and some crazy bot or person comes along and all your lenses are locked. They then issue a ticket number if you want it followed up and then don't respond to the ticket. That's madness in my book, why would you want to upset your customer base?
Normal people like you and me are the lifeblood of Squidoo and it's got where it is on the backs of our unique articles. They say they are in charge and its a free site so we can take our content away if we don't like the rules. The day will come when Squidoo falls foul of all this craziness in a big way and that day can't come soon enough. They have already slipped from 160th in Alexa rankings for the world's most popular sites to 758th in just 3 months, that says it all.

Thanks for your comments. When the payment for a tier 1 lens goes from $60 to $24 there is obviously something wrong with the system. Considering the amount of time taken to make the lenses and keep updating and correcting them, I would see this as slave labour and you will be very lucky to earn more than 50 cents to $1 an hour if you manged to get into tier 1. Not really a medium for earning any more.

I am not investing anymore time or effort into this site, but just waiting to see what happens. I am putting my energies into other sites now. Is it a scam, in terms of someone trying to cheat us? I'm sad that they have gone filter crazy, I suppose with over a million lenses they have to do something like that, but I would think that they would have paid close attention to people who have been faithful active users that really took creating lenses seriously. I'm not sure if there is even any value to being a Giant Squid anymore. I agree with your speculation on the "This lens has been taken down" message showing to Google could hurt the ranking of Squidoo. Great lens!

I was at Suite101 - They overhauled their system and quite frankly the new system is not that much different from the old one. I like them but I left because you can hardly earn any income. I went to HUBPages. It was fun! What happened? They banned me! I came over to Squidoo. Super easy platform. More fun! What's happening? IDK. CIA had to send in some cleaners? (?) I am so glad some one had the nerve to adress a serious problem! I used to get lenses I turned in for contsts locked and loose out on my entry, so much easier to just delete things. Blessed!

I find this very interesting and in one way I'm glad to hear that it's bots who decided my first lens was not worthy of publication. I am taking a course on how to create lenses, followed instructions , I thought, and had my lens taken down. I now know why it was probably taken down but I'm used to building my own websites where the timing of how I set up my page and when I publish it is not as critical as it is here. I do not know whether this learning curve here is worth the effort. I think I'll ask for a refund for my course and focus on my own websites instead.

Thank you for your comments. It will obviously take time making your own websites but at least your content will be safe from deletion.

You may be right. If a site has thousands of pages that says This Lens Has Been Taken Down, what would Google think of it? I guess only Squidoo would know how many pages of out their total have this message and what kind of impact it would have to the site overall. So, in that sense, it is a gamble that Squidoo is taking.

Hi Audrey, thanks for commenting. It is a big gamble and if they find out that they have put both feet in their mouths it will be too late to recoup their customer base.

It's all a guessing game with no specifics as to what is actually wrong with the lens. Who has time for this nonsense? I know I don't. I'll keep a few lenses but I don't plan on adding to what I've written here so far.

The thing that makes me madder than anything else is the inability to talk to anyone at Squidoo. No phone numbers, your emails are ignored, you have no where to turn if you have a problem. With all the money that Squidoo must make, they could provide this service, but they prefer to keep collecting money off our work, while ignoring our problems. I don't think that filters should be used at all, but if they must be, they should have the items they flag checked out by real humans before taking any action.

All I can say is I am so sorry about your situation. I have not been here long enough to understand what is going on. I do know that it gets more difficult to write to a certain standard but being new it is teaching me to be more original. There is so much to learn yet. I have not really made any money as of yet so it won't be a loss to me, but I can only imagine the loss of those who have and having to deal with their lenses being locked or down. Take one day at a time things can get better.

Thanks for your comments. I just wish Squidoo would be more interactive with people and not follow along in Google's footsteps. Google don't tell you what's going on either.

@Lensmaster.Deleting an article and redoing it to bring it into compliance is another option. All depends on how much value you put on your own writing and how much work you want to get into to present your writing online.

hotweb May 24, 2013 @ 4:55 am
Thanks for your comments. the only problem is all my articles are hand written and unique so because Squidoo won't respond to the tickets they issued me I have no idea what to change.

Thanks for commenting. If only they checked who had the original content first it would work but so mach plagiarism of lenses is taking place and if the spammer puts an earlier date on their copied post, only Google would know which one was the genuine one, not Squidoo.

Thank you Katie for your comments and the Squidlike, we all live in hope. I think squidoo are thinking that the loss is because of Google Panda but I firmly believe it's because we are limited in the amount of special love we can give lenses these days due to squidlike cutbacks and other negative Squidoo actions. They are now 496th overall in Alexa rankings, they used to be 160th. I think they have shot themselves in the foot, just like Google did with Penguin and Panda.

So, let me see if I understand this: your work is stolen in the form of plagiarism, and Squidoo locks your lenses to punish - you? It seems to me that this action *supports* plagiarism online rather than discouraging it. And operates on the assumption that lensmasters on Squidoo are the plagiarists in every case.

hotweb May 20, 2013 @ 5:06 pm
Thanks for the comments. The main problem is that Squidoo don't tell you what the problem is and then they don't respond to tickets, they give you a case number and then don't follow the case up. So you are left completely in the dark.

I see great info lenses taken down while shopping cart lenses stay and they have very good rankings.

Thankyou chi_kung for your comments and the squidlike. I agree with your observations. Squidoo has already lost lots of legitimate lensmasters and their ranking is slipping daily in the search engines and Alexa. Spam lenses seem to be the winner in all of this, hardly what Squidoo planned. More information here. http:/hq.squidoo.com/tips/what-to-do-with-a-locked-lens-and-more-advice-about-content/

I see Bloomingrose says side widgets are too commercial for Squidoo.I'd better check the two locked lenses for side widget too then. (I deleted 2 other lenses, not because I thought they were bad but didn't want to spend the time on a low ranking lens). Why would Squidoo suggest Amazon side widgets the? Good luck hotweb. It must be really hard after all your work.kind of makes you feel 'dirty' and it's not warranted.

Thanks for the squidlike and comments. All the fun has gone out of Squidoo lately due to all the stupid changes. Wouldn't be so bad if they actually addressed their own regulations and replied to cases within 30 days, letting the lensmaster know what the exact problem was. They probably don't even know themselves, blaming it on the BOT.
Bots seem to be in charge these days, humans take a back seat or don't even sit down to look. More info here. http:/hq.squidoo.com/tips/what-to-do-with-a-locked-lens-and-more-advice-about-content/

So sorry you are going through all of this. I know you are a good writer with high integrity. The filters are reacting to all kinds of strange things, like you can put an amazon product in an amazon module but not in a side widget. The "too commercial" thing is disingenuous - we are here to make money for the most part, and that involves selling. Sometimes I will not have a personal story to tell about a keyword and yet I can spend hours researching which of the products are the best - just to possibly be faced with having a lens declared "too thin." I hope Squidoo becomes friendlier to its lensmasters again. At least I have meet a lot of cool people! Pinned to my board: "Just for Squids" and blessed.

Thanks for your lovely comments Rose. If Squidoo are frowning on Amazon widgets, why would they ask us to add one. None of the latest Squidoo regulations seem good or fair.
